Born and raised in a sleepy beach town nestled at the base of wildflower and waterfall covered mountainsides, wild foraging for medicinal and culinary plants and herbs happened naturally for me.
My father spent a portion of his twenties living in the mountains in a teepee, with his best companions: a palomino horse and a spider monkey. Bedtime for me as a child meant listening, rapt, to his wild and glorious tales of his care-free life in the mountains, and the deep, personal relationship he had with those mountains and the plants that grew upon them. My enchantment with the mountains and all their medicinal and edible gifts was forged in these stories.
When I was in my mid-twenties I lived in these same mountains for a bit. One of my favorite spots in these ancient hills was an old sandstone cave, covered in Chumash drawings, in a small, unincorporated community called Painted Cave. There's an outcropping in Painted Cave that provides a panoramic view of my hometown, Santa Barbara, as well as the Pacific Ocean, the Channel Islands, and the Santa Ynez mountain range, including Paradise Road, where my dad lived, and Happy Canyon Road, where I lived.
After my time in these mountains, it was a natural evolution that Painted Cave Apothecary was born, my small collection of sustainably wild-collected plants and herbs, processed by hand. Each product is hand-created using wild and local plants and herbs, while paying homage to my mountains, and Painted Cave, California. Thank you for honoring them with me.
